Drake: Club Paradise Tour 2012

At the concert

I was thinking about getting my boyfriend tickets to see Childish Gambino in Chicago. But then I realized that they were sold out and the only ones available through StubHub were way overpriced. So, on a whim I decided we should take a little road trip to Columbus to see someone we both love, Drake.

Tickets were sold out for this concert, as well, but ever since I got pregnant with Nahla we haven’t really had a chance to do anything special together. So we made the decision to splurge a little (or a lot) and at that point, things came together pretty quickly.  My mom and brother agreed to babysit the kiddies for the night. So, we bought the tickets on Friday and left on Saturday morning(2/18).

Google Maps on the iPad

The drive was about 7 hours and not really all that bad. My boyfriend actually drove the entire way there. We split the ride back. With lots of snacks and drinks, iPhone’s full of music, and a DJ app on the iPad we managed to have a pretty good time. With the help of Google Maps we even arrived without getting lost, to my delight. 🙂

Road Trippin’. Notice the matching RayBans? Too cute, eh?

We arrived around 5pm. We got to the hotel, showered, and got ready for the concert. By the time we were ready to go it was almost 8pm so we headed to the arena. The concert was at Ohio State University at the Schottenstein Center. For over $300 the seats were… decent. But once the concert started it didn’t matter where we sat. We were too zoned into the stage to care.

Kendrick Lamar

His opening acts were Chase N Cashe, A$AP Rocky, and Kendrick Lamar. I wasn’t very familiar with these artists but my boyfriend was really looking forward to them. Some of the crowd got hyped when they came on stage and others kind of… didn’t care. Obviously, must of us were there to see Drake but I will say the opening performers did pretty well. I recognized a few songs and even though I wasn’t completely familiar with them I still enjoyed the performances. Especially Kendrick Lamar. Being that it was a college tour it was scaled down a bit and didn’t have the magnitude of a Kanye or Lady Gaga tour, but it didn’t matter.

Drake

Let me say, Drake has some amazing vision. This man spent about 30 minutes going from the left side, to the right side, and down the middle saying hi and commenting on many people’s different looks. He was pointing out things on people in the very last row. It was an interesting break in the concert and was actually pretty funny.

I’ve never really seen Drake dance aside from that night. I now know why he isn’t dancing in his videos. He looks so silly when he’s on that stage. I don’t know if he’s joking around or actually attempting to dance but he is certainly lacking in that department. It’s fun to watch though… definitely kept the crowd entertained.

After the concert was over they announced that he would be going to a local bar. We decided to go to the bar and after waiting in line for an hour (it was freezing), through all the pushing and shoving, and the $40 a head entrance, we did end up seeing Drake there. He and his entourage arrived about an hour after we did. They stayed in a VIP area that was about 4 feet above the crowd. My boyfriend and I danced the night away about 5 ft away from him. Unfortunately, I left my camera in the car so I didn’t get a chance to get any good pictures. I did have my phone but do you know how hard it is to take a good picture in the dark with all the heat in a club? It’s nearly impossible. Overall, awesome experience. And Drake did not disappoint.
