Gerber Yogurt Melts vs. Homemade Yoplait Yogurt Melts

I buy a lot of Gerber products, like most parents, and I love the little puffs they make because they are perfect for the kids to snack on and they seem to be a bit less of a choking hazard than Cheerios, huge plus. I also love their little yogurt melts but those things are sooo overpriced. I think they’re almost $3 for a bag. My kids could eat a bag, as a snack, in like 10 minutes. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been known to be a little frivolous with my spending especially when it comes to food and my kids. If it’s convenient, my kids will eat it, and it’s not too messy then I usually buy it. But for some reason these yogurt melts have always seemed like such a waste of money to me. And then… inspiration struck. I was on Pinterest one day and I saw something that looked like the perfect alternative so I decided to give it a shot!

You only need a few things to do it. A cookie sheet lined with wax paper, a sandwich bag with the tip cut off, and some yogurt. I used whatever we had on hand which happened to be Yoplait Light Strawberry, perfect. Cheaper and healthier. Little Jaden is about 30lbs so fat-free is a plus!

After about every 10 dots of yogurt I would get a strawberry stuck in my tip. I just squeezed hard back into the container and it came right out.Β

My little dots came in lots of different sizes. Soo many melts with just one 6oz yogurt. Slip them into the freezer for about 1 hour.Β

They pop right off of the wax paper. I put them in a bowl but the kids were sleeping and I wasn’t sure how fast they would melt so I put them in a Ziploc bag and put them back in the freezer until snack time.

Jaden wasn’t sure which one he wanted to try… he took a handful of both πŸ™‚

The kids are useΒ to their freeze-dried yogurt melts so they were skeptical for a few seconds but once they tried the new cold version they ate them right up. Sense we’ve had such a warm winter I imagine that the summer will be extra hot so these will be good to have on hand. Nahla has become fond of chewing ice and these give her the same coolness without mommy having to worry about her choking on a hunk of ice.

I definitely prefer these homemade melts.

Pros: they cost about $.50 versus $2-3 for the Gerber ones andΒ they only take a couple of minutes to make. Cons: You can’t pack them in the diaper bag because they’ll melt and… that’s my only con. πŸ™‚

Nahla and Jaden, my “twins”, definitely enjoyed their special yogurt melts at snack time πŸ™‚

These would be great when the kids are teething. The coldness would help their gums feel better. And like you said no worry about choking on ice. Looks like an easy and inexpensive alternative to the store bought one. I know when my son was little he liked the gerber fruit but those bags can be expensive.

Yes, actually, my son is teething right now and he’s really been enjoying these little snacks. He’s not a fan of the Orajel so these cold melts have been great for him.

I would be concerned using light yogurt as that usually contains aspartame. Great idea though. I really like stony field yogurt. Its organic and does not contain the harsh sweeteners that other brands do.

I had the same concern about giving children (or anyone) aspartame. I would love to try these with a full fat plain Greek yogurt blended with some fruit. Then they get fat for their brains and protein for their bodies.

How old was your daughter when you started giving her these?

I love the idea! I was also concerned about light and fat free yogurt for babies and children. I agree with Lori, Stony Field is a better choice. Fat free is never a good option for anyone, but especially babies. The less ingredients the better πŸ™‚ I am definitely going to be trying this though, thanks for the great idea!
