31 Days of Being a Writer
Day Seven
“Substitute ‘damn’ every time you’re inclined to write ‘very;’ your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.” ― Mark Twain
I’m really tired = I’m exhausted.
I’ve very happy = I’m elated.
I’m really sad = I’m depressed.
It’s very ugly = It’s hideous.
Or simply drop the ‘really’ and ‘very’ all together. Whenever I encounter someone over using “really” and “very” I like to them that really and very… really don’t mean very much.
Stop using them in your writing and it will push you to use your vocabulary and be more efficient with your writing.
