Day 11: Intuition

31 Days of Being a Writer

Day Eleven

The only good writing is intuitive writing. It would be a big bore if you knew where it was going. It has to be exciting, instantaneous and it has to be a surprise. Then it all comes blurting out and it’s beautiful. I’ve had a sign by my typewriter for 25 years now which reads, ‘DON’T THINK!’” ―Ray Bradbury

I recently read a book named “Flat Out Love”. I’m on a total “New Adult” kick right now so even though this didn’t seem like something I’d normally read, I felt drawn to it.

It was so much more than I’d hoped for. To sum it up in one word, it was intuitive. I was immediately in love with the characters, the story line was new and intriguing, I felt what the protagonist felt, and even though I should have figured out the ending… I didn’t. And I am SO happy that I didn’t because it made the book that much more amazing.

I have still thought about this book on a daily basis since finishing it over 3 weeks ago. As a writer, you should aim to affect people this way. Aim to be intuitive. We ALL have intuition but we don’t all follow it. Use what you have and what you know to your advantage. Whether you’re a scholar or a scrub you know something that someone else doesn’t and that should be your angle.
