31 Days of Being a Writer
Day One
“The road to hell is paved with adverbs.” – Stephen King
The kids are almost up from their nap time and I have class in two hours so today I will keep it short and sweet.
If you’ve ever dreamed of being a writer then the first step is to become a reader. You learn so much from the written word. I don’t care if you read about the history of 18th Century England or Harry Potter. You can read anything as long as it’s published with some semblance of grammatical integrity. Read. And read some more. Read the newspaper, read a book, read a magazine, read a brochure, read a recipe, read until you are so compelled to write that you can no longer contain yourself.
If you are aiming to become a better writer, by reading, then I suggest you use an e-reader. Highlight words as you read and learn their definitions. With physical books most of us just use context clues to gain an idea of what a word means but without the real definition we never grasp the true meaning.
Define it and understand it. Until you read you will never know that there are a plethora of words in our language to describe something. A great writer doesn’t need many words they just need the right words.
Grammar and lexicon can take someone from a mediocre to astonishing. Be astonishing. Go read.
***I have decided to challenge myself by participating in a 31 Days of Change challenge hosted by The Nester.
A short description straight from her site “What’s 31 Days? Basically anyone can join in, just pick a topic and write about it every day for the month of October–we all come here and link up on October 1st. Think short posts with one point made each day.”
So that’s what I’m here to do. This is my first go with a daily challenge so be kind. I do have some things scheduled for the next few weeks and a lot of changes happening but I will do my damnedest to fulfill my challenge.
So stick with me and I promise you’ll glean something interesting, new, noteworthy, or perhaps get a few chuckles along the way.
