Book Review: Thoughtless and Effortless by SC Stephens

I’ve been known to fall for fictional characters in my life. First there was Ron Weasley, then Landon Carter, and most recently the gorgeous and enigmatic rock star Kellan Kyle.

Kellan is one of two mains characters from S.C. Stephens’ “Thoughtless” Series. The heroine in the story is Kiera, a young women who unexpectedly creates a love triangle between her long time boyfriend, Denny, and his old friend Kellan.

If you’re looking for the typical synopsis here it is straight from Good Reads:

For almost two years now, Kiera’s boyfriend, Denny, has been everything she’s ever wanted: loving, tender and endlessly devoted to her. When they head off to a new city to start their lives together, Denny at his dream job and Kiera at a top-notch university, everything seems perfect. Then an unforeseen obligation forces the happy couple apart.

Feeling lonely, confused, and in need of comfort, Kiera turns to an unexpected source – a local rock star named Kellan Kyle. At first, he’s purely a friend that she can lean on, but as her loneliness grows, so does their relationship. And then one night everything changes…and none of them will ever be the same.

But I’m not here to tell you the synopsis… 😉

After reading just the synopsis of the book I wasn’t actually all that interested. Those two short paragraphs hardly do this awesome story any justice. Needless to say, I am forever grateful that I gave the book a chance, because it quickly became one of my favorites.

By the end of “Effortless” (the second book in the series) I was utterly in love with Kellan Kyle and I seriously cared about Kiera, I loved to read about her growth as a woman. I totally wish I had a guy like Denny in my life, too, because Stephens depicts him as such a great human being. It’s not that easy to come by people who truly have your best intentions at heart and that’s what Denny seems to have for Kiera.

All three characters make mistakes throughout the books but they are all completely relatable. The story isn’t totally far-fetched like the Fifty Shades series… I mean c’mon 26-year-old self-made Billionaire? Geez.

The reason I even found this series is because after reading Fifty Shades of Grey and it’s all too similar, but much better, Bared to You, I was in need of another good read. I’m really not a huge fan of the typical romance novel so it’s hard to find a good book that isn’t littered with unnecessary and awkwardly written sex scenes. But the Thoughtless series proved to be just that.

Is it a romance novel? I believe so. But is it “old lady porn”? That’s a definite, NO. Stephens does an amazing job of balancing the story with all the emotional ups and downs and never gets so sexually descriptive that you’d be embarrassed if someone caught you reading it.

I briefly wondered if I loved this series so much because I had just finished ATTEMPTING to read “Beautiful Disaster” by Jamie McGuire and it was TERRIBLE. *Ducks down to avoid the rotten food being thrown her way*  Yes, I know people are obsessed with this book and think that it’s just the bee’s knees but wow… I couldn’t finish it. I forced myself to keep reading but once it got the part where the father shows up needing 25k for some damn gambling debt… I just had to stop. Seriously? Travis is completely undesirable and probably has a future of wife-beating ahead of him. But again, I digress.

Perhaps my reading one bad book made “Thoughtless” even more appealing but in reality, I think not. The “Thoughtless” series has so far been amazing. I cannot wait for the next book to be released (later this year?). If you are a “Fifty Shades” fan, a “Bared to You” fan, or ,sigh, even a “Beautiful Disaster” fan… then this series is for you.

Have you fallen in love with Kellan Kyle? Or were you Team Denny?
