Happy Birthday, Azjah!
This past weekend I made my very first cake pop cake! The whole idea was a little daunting at first. I was making the cake for my best friend’s daughter’s birthday and she gave me free rein on design. So, I decided I would make it purple themed. It’s my favorite color… and it’s Justin Bieber’s favorite color… and it just so happen’s that Azjah (the birthday girl) looovvesss the Biebs!
Not only was my first attempt at constructing a stand a relative success but the pops were definitely the best I’ve ever made. And I’m extremely proud to say that unlike most people constructing cake pops, I made mine completely from scratch.
I used some recipes that were specifically meant for cake pops. The chocolate frosting was kind of whipped. It was really fluffy and flavorful almost like a mousse. And the cake, which I baked in a 9×13 pan, came all the way up to the top edge of the pan. It was HUGE. It was also super good. Way better than any box mix.
If you are thinking about making cake pops it’s definitely a good idea to use a box mix with canned frosting. It is very consistent and easy to work with.
Remember that not all recipes are created equal. I made a red and green velvet CAKE recipe a few weeks back and the cake with the frosting tasted good and really moist but when I made them into cake pops they were dreadful. They leaked so much oil and just fell off of the sticks. It was a disaster.
I’m becoming more okay with all the ups and downs that this business has given me. I have created some things that taste absolutely amazing. Shining successes! And right along with those… some seriously disastrous attempts. For example, these oily ugly monsters.
Anywho, these chocolate cake pops that I made were SOOOO GOOD!! I’m not a fan of cake pops. Weird, I know. But I’ve never had any that tasted as good as those. I ate about 6 of them… maybe more. To be fair I did share with Nahla and Da’Vi… a little. 😉
I was on a serious cake pop kick. So much so, that once the cake pop cake was picked up and I was no longer housing the yummy little treats I dropped by Starbucks to buy a couple. That was a mistake. Complete mistake. They were disgusting. Slimy and OBVIOUSLY previously frozen. They zap them in the microwave when they run out of the deforested ones. How stupid is that? The first time I bought one it was to give to Nahla and the chocolate was melted and the inside was really cold with a gross texture. Even she wouldn’t eat it.
So, if you’re looking for some delicious, never frozen, cake pops for yourself or an event The Sugar Bar can gladly fill that order for you! 🙂
“Biba <3’s JB!” All of the white pops had little saying on them like “Azjah”, “Happy Birthday”, her age (6), and some other randomness. I didn’t get the chance to go to her party because I had class, but I hope she liked it! 🙂
**And if you’re curious that particular stand holds anywhere from 45-49 pops. I wrap my cake pops because, although it might be cuter when they aren’t wrapped, I think it’s a lot more sanitary and if people would rather enjoy them at home or if they are being given out as favors then the wrapped pops are more convenient. This cake had 45 pops which were pretty big at about 1 1/2-2 inches wide. If these are replacing a cake or dessert 2-3 per person is usually a good estimate of how many you would need.
It turned out great, Sarah!
